PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Laws, a Masters of Commerce (accounting and finance) and a Master of Taxation. He is admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia. He is a member of the Law Society of New South Wales and a Fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia.  Peter is also a registered Notary Public. Peter has been a practising lawyer for over 27 years and prior to establishing MBP legal, Peter was a corporate and tax partner in a medium to large Sydney commercial law firm.

CURRENT PRACTICE

Peter practices in the areas of business, commercial, taxation, insolvency law and with the assistance of our commercial litigation team, commercial, corporate insolvency and tax litigation.  He has substantial commercial and legal experience and is the senior lawyer in MBP Legal.

Peter is able to tailor a strategy to a clients needs, whether it be a corporate or business restructure, a business or corporate merger, divestment, acquisition or fundraising.  He has extensive experience in negotiating and undertaking private equity transactions and the taxation and related legal complexities that arise in respect of such transactions.

Many of Peter’s clients seek his advice in respect of a wide range of legal issues including the structuring of private and tax efficient investment structures, advice on corporate compliance and governance  issues, tax and corporate consolidation issues, contractual issues and disputes,  intellectual property and information technology protection and licensing arrangements, capital funding and capital structuring transactions (often involving an understanding of the financial interests of a number of shareholders and stakeholders) as well as the taxation consequences associated with cross border transactions.

Peter is actively engaged in wealth planning law and regularly provides advice to clients on business succession structuring, asset protection, estate planning and superannuation.   This area of the law requires an intimate knowledge of the taxation of trusts (whether it be a superannuation warrant structure which complies with the Superannuation Investment Supervision Act, a family discretionary trust, hybrid trust or unit trust structure) as well as the taxation of companies and the operation of the Australian capital gains tax regime (and small business concessions and roll-overs) and the blending of this knowledge base with the changing law relating to corporate insolvency and bankruptcy –especially where a client is facing financial jeopardy.
